The man listened to her talk about her disease. Sam blinked back tears each time they threatened to spill over. How come this was so hard? Oh, right, he was madly in love with her. Even if they weren’t together again, news like this would have killed him. However,…
Sam closed his eyes and sighed as she talked to him. The boy let his mind wonder back to high school and the unbreakable girl that Quinn was. Did she have the disease then? Just waiting to come out and attack her immune system? Maybe if technology would have been faster, the elf blood would be useful right now. Sam quickly came back to Earth to continue listening to Quinn. She needed him and it was not a time to be off in science fiction land.
“Please…I don’t care if you had kicked it…” he opened his eyes and brushed a piece of hair out of her face. “I still want to know. Just…in case.” The man licked his lips before placing a kiss on the inside of her palm. “I love you so much, Quinn. Just….just know that,” he whispered as he removed his lips from her hand. He looked up at her. She looked so bruised and broken and the sight of her physically hurt him. She was his lover, his soulmate…the person that was made for him. She was his penguin.
All of the sudden he heard news that would once rock his world. Quinn was pregnant. Not only did he have to worry about her health, but about the health of the little one growing inside of her. And he knew who the father was of course. A part of him wanted to sing out in joy. He was going to get a second chance to see all the firsts a baby could have. Sure, it would never replace the loss of Samaire’s, but it would help. On the other hand, what sort of toil was it going to take out on Quinn? “That’s…I’m sure they told me…but you know me. The moment people start talking over my head, I zone out.” He squeezed her hand gently. “We’re going to be parents again…” he said, mostly to himself.
Sam had continued weeping into her bedding. He didn’t really understand a lot of what the doctors had said. In fact, as soon as they started using medical terms, the boy blanked out and focused on Quinn. Even when her mom had tried to explain things to him in…
The man listened to her talk about her disease. Sam blinked back tears each time they threatened to spill over. How come this was so hard? Oh, right, he was madly in love with her. Even if they weren’t together again, news like this would have killed him. However, they were together and this…well, this was so hard to deal with. He wanted to take away every ounce of pain she had. Sam wished he could take her place.
“Please…don’t be sorry. It’s okay. I just…Quinn, I can’t lose you again.” Sam pulled her hand up and brushed kisses across her knuckles. He closed his eyes as he kept listening to her speak. “But baby, you need to tell me this stuff, okay? Promise me. Promise from now on you tell me. Because if not, I am going to be so worried about you. Always.” He opened his eyes and stared into hers. God, her eyes were still so perfect. He felt like he could get lost in them forever. He shook his head lightly to bring him back to reality.
Sam sighed and then his face showed the signs of confusion. What did Samaire have to do with this? Why would her disease affect the little blond girl? And why was she not wanting to tell anyone.” His eyes squinted. “Quinn, I’m really confused now. How does this affect Samaire other than you are her mom?”
Sam was panicked. Everything Judy Fabray told him was running through his mind a million miles a minute and the exhausted newly dyed brunette couldn’t stop and think about them on at a time. Quinn had been in and out of consciousness but the doctor said she would soon…
Sam had continued weeping into her bedding. He didn’t really understand a lot of what the doctors had said. In fact, as soon as they started using medical terms, the boy blanked out and focused on Quinn. Even when her mom had tried to explain things to him in simpler terms, it was still confusing. However, he got the gist of things. Quinn was sick. Apparently she probably knew about the…Ludas or whatever it was before this. And then she also had some blood problem that made her tired. He knew that was the reason she bruised easily and why her cuts bled forever. Sam was scared she wouldn’t stop bleeding. She did, though, thankfully.
As the boy was crying, he felt a hand push into his short hair. He wasn’t sure if it was real or just wishful thinking until he heard the unmistakable voice of his lover. Sure, it was croaky and scratchy, but it was Quinn. Sam instantly brought his head up to look at her. Yes, she was awake, for how long he didn’t know, but he would make the most of this time.
“Quinn…” he choked out. The brunette instantly started kissing every inch of her face he could touch. They were light kisses so she wouldn’t feel any pain, but still kisses. Finally, he reached her lips and he placed a gentle kiss on them. “Baby…you scared me so bad…” he ghosted a whisper across her lips.
He sat back down in the chair, instantly pulling her hand in his. “Quinn…why didn’t you tell me? God, I love you so much…you have to tell me stuff like this, baby.”
Sam was panicked. Everything Judy Fabray told him was running through his mind a million miles a minute and the exhausted newly dyed brunette couldn’t stop and think about them on at a time. Quinn had been in and out of consciousness but the doctor said she would soon be waking up for longer periods of time.
The man held his girlfriend’s hand. Since the moment his plane landed and he arrived at the hospital, he hadn’t left her side. He felt bad that he had only seen Samaire for a brief moment earlier that day when Brittany brought her up to the hospital. She was scared but happy to see her dad. Sam hadn’t eaten. He had no appetite. How could he possibly eat when the love of his life was in the hospital, sick? There was no way.
Sam swallowed hard and rubbed the pad of his thumb across the back of her hand and sighed. “Quinny…baby…please…you have to get better. You have to do this for me…and Samaire. I need you, babe.” The boy let a few tears fall from his eyes before choking the rest back.
“We watch the season pull up it’s own stakes, And catch the last weekend of the last week, Before the gold and the glimmer have been replaced, Another sun soaked season fades away, You have stolen my heart, You have stolen my heart, Invitation only, grand farewells, Crash the best one, of the best ones, Clear liquor and cloudy eyed, too early to say goodnight, You have stolen my heart, You have stolen my heart…”
Sam took ran his hands over her newly cut hair and blinked back a few tears. The doctors had done a good job getting most of the blood and glass out of it, but he could still find a few pieces they missed. God, she looked so broken. He continued to sing to her.
“And from the ballroom floor we are in celebration, One good stretch before our hibernation, Our dreams assured and we all, will sleep well, sleep well, sleep well, sleep well, sleep well, You have stolen, You have stolen, You have stolen my heart, I watch you spin around in your highest heels, You are the best one, of the best ones, You have stolen, You have stolen, You have stolen my heart…”
Sam finished the song and laid his head down on the bed and let the tears come. His body was shaking and there was nothing he could do to stop it.
Brittany: [Samaire lightly crying in the background, shaky sigh] Sam, this isn't baby... er, Quinn, it's Brittany, I'm just on Q's phone...
Sam: Oh...is that Samaire? Is she okay? Wait. Why are you on Quinn's phone?
Brittany: Yeah, that's munchkin face, she's okay, Finn's trying to calm her down but he's not very good at it, I think she just wants her mommy. There was an accident... Quinn's okay, well, mostly, we're at the hospital and the front of the car looks like like an accordion... but Sammy's okay, not even a scratch and Quinn's just a little banged up and it took awhile to wake her up...
Sam: Wait. An accident? [deep breaths] Fu-shi-damn. I don't...I need to get on a plane and I need to call my manger. No shooting tomorrow. I...okay, so Samaire is okay...but Quinn...wait, how long did it take, Britt?
Brittany: [to Finn] Dance for her... it'll make her laugh, it always works... [to Sam] Sorry... um... the accident was a few hours ago, so maybe a little over an hour-ish... she fell asleep driving or something and it was raining and she ran into the back of one of those big grocery store trucks at the stop light... the doctors are running lots of tests...
Sam: [waits quietly] Shit. Britt...she didn't really wake up on time yesterday. She missed her final and I called to Samaire crying...I'm worried. Okay...I emailed my manager, he's going to cancel shooting for a while. And I scheduled a flight. I leave in two hours.
Brittany: [sighs] I heard, she told the doctor while I was in there and then Judy came and got all maternalistic and asked me to take care of Sammy while they talked medical stuff... they said something about her being anemic or something... she looks white as a sheet and I think she's losing her hair... it was like way short...
Sam: Okay....look, as soon as I get to Lima, I'll be there. At the hospital or whatever even though I am not looking forward to seeing Judy. And, Britt....she cut her hair...really short...because I did...at least I think that's why she did it.
Brittany: Ooooh, okay... it looked fierce, except for the little bit of blood and glass in it... I'll tell her you're coming, I guess she's staying the night for observatory or something and I think we're taking Sammy for the night, so mini you will be with us, we'll watch cartoons and make popcorn and stuff and she'll play with Lord Tubbington and it'll all be okay, Sammy.
Sam: Shit...please tell her. I'll stay by her side all night. Britt, tell Samaire that I'll see her in the morning. Okay? I'm sure she'll be in great hands with you and Finn.
Brittany: [Samaire giggling in the background] I'll tell her, well, both hers... [pause] um, so yeah, Quinn's probably going to be mad at me for calling you, but it's her fault for giving me her purse, sooo, yeah. Safe flight, Sam and promise we'll keep your baby girl endlessly entertained.
Sam: Okay. Thanks, Britt. Tell Finn I said hi. Love you.
Brittany: [Samaire lightly crying in the background, shaky sigh] Sam, this isn't baby... er, Quinn, it's Brittany, I'm just on Q's phone...

Sam Evans here. I'm 20 and from Lima, Ohio. I left Lima after getting excepted into UCLA. Now, I'm a model and an actor. My newest project is to start a band.
I'm still the same guy. I don't let being famous get to me. I still read comic books and geek out over Avatar related stuff.
Just found out I have a beautiful little girl named Samaire. She means the world to me. As does her mother.
